You Don’t Need to “Undo” Summer

The Worst Thing You Can Do After an “Off” Summer

Summer can get a little... loose.

Vacations happen. There are more dinners out, drinks on the patio, cookouts, weekends away, later nights, and weeks where your normal workout schedule simply doesn’t happen.

Maybe you were less consistent than you wanted to be. And that's okay sometimes.

But what I don’t want you to do is hit the end of summer, step on the scale, panic, and decide you need to spend the next month “undoing” everything.

Because you probably don’t.

First, if the scale is a few pounds higher, that does not automatically mean you gained that much body fat.

Think about how different summer can be from your normal routine. More restaurant meals usually means more sodium. More carbs means your body stores more glycogen and water.

Travel can mess with digestion. Alcohol can leave you dehydrated and inflamed. Poor sleep and stress can also cause your body to hold onto water.

All of that can show up on the scale.

So before you decide the summer “ruined” your progress, give your body a chance to get back into its normal rhythm.

And whatever you do... PLEASE do not try to punish the weight off. This is where I see so many women get themselves into trouble.

They immediately cut their calories way down, eliminate carbs, add a bunch of cardio, swear off restaurants, and tell themselves they're going to be "perfect" again.

It feels productive for a few days, then they're hungry. Tired. Sore. Craving everything. And eventually, the extreme plan becomes too much.

Here comes the familiar cycle: Restrict → burn out → overeat → feel guilty → restart.

Sound familiar? Instead, I want you to ask yourself a much better question.

Not: “How quickly can I get this weight off?”

But: “What habits slipped this summer that I need to rebuild?”

Maybe your protein intake dropped. Maybe your workouts went from four days a week to one or two. Maybe your daily walks disappeared. Maybe water got replaced by iced coffee and happy hour more often than you'd like to admit. 😂 Maybe your bedtime became... nonexistent.

Great. Now we actually have something useful to work with. Start there.

Get back to eating regular meals. Put protein on your plate. Drink your water. Get your steps. Start strength training consistently again. Prioritize sleep.

Nothing extreme. Nothing sexy. Just the basics that you already know make you feel good. Then give it a little time.

Give your body a week or two of consistency before deciding you need to make drastic changes based on what the scale says.

You may be surprised by how quickly the puffiness comes down, digestion improves, energy comes back, workouts feel better, and you start feeling like yourself again.

And if you did gain some body fat over the summer? That's okay too.

You can recognize that some of your choices weren't aligned with your goals without beating yourself up over them.

There's a huge difference between taking accountability and punishing yourself.

You enjoyed your summer. Now you get to decide what you want the next season to look like.

That's it.

You don't need to undo the vacations, margaritas, cookouts, or memories. You don't need two workouts a day. You don't need 1,200 calories.

And you definitely don't need to spend September trying to make up for June, July, and August.

Get your routine back, give it time, and keep moving forward.
